Ogi Bogi The Elephant Yogi, Stories about yoga for children
Science shows that a relaxed state of awareness is optimal for receptivity, learning and problem solving. In Ogi Bogi, The Elephant Yogi: Stories About Yoga for Children, readers will find a collection of original stories that teach children how to attain this state of awareness and use it to deal with issues like self-confidence, social skills, emotions, peer pressure and academic success. This fun and illustrated book, featuring children of varied racial, ethnic and cultural backgrounds, is aimed at elementary school children and introduces yoga postures, breathing practices, and meditation. These techniques have been proven to reduce disruptive behavior and even improve test scores. Constructed to help children work independently, it doesn't require any special clothing, equipment or room set-ups! Teachers, parents and other adults will learn easy-to-use strategies to enhance the self-management skills of children in their care. Clear examples, in child-friendly language, help children make a direct connection between a real-life situation, a specific exercise and its effect. This helps them learn to manage emotions and reduce stress. Over the last 15 years, these techniques have been field-tested with over 4,000 children. These children and their experiences in the yoga classes inspired many of the stories in the book!

What a great book. I feel better already after reading this book. As a matter a fact a felt a sense of calmness almost immediately upon looking at the book’s cover and opening up to page one. I love how the book teaches our children a state of awareness and builds their social emotional intelligence. It’s an illustrated book. And it’s a fun book. Elementary school kids are going to love learning to relax with Ogi Bogi. And teachers are going to be relieved when some of their disruptive students become less disruptive after being exposed to this book. Simple poses are used in the book to help children focus on their breathing, focus their mind, and balance their lives. Elizabeth Gibbs does a wonderful job of bringing forth the real value of yoga, which is developing one’s own values. Elementary students will greatly benefit from this book, as will their teachers, coaches, parents, and anyone else who is working with our youth.

This book was given to me as a gift from a friend to share with my four-year-old granddaughter. We have had countless hours of fun going through the beautifully illustrated and well-explained poses, and I find the format especially user-friendly. Despite being an in-depth yoga guidebook, it's written in a friendly, story-like format that makes it easy to pick out one chapter to focus on at a time. With sections designed to help specific childhood issues like learning to deal with conflict resolution, manage difficult emotions, and deal with everyday stresses, this book promotes a health and wellness lifestyle that will benefit children for a lifetime. Recommended for all pre-school and elementary school classes as well as parents and grandparents of young children.

I have bought several copies. One for myself and two for gifts. I gave one for my workplace which works with children who are chronically ill. The story of Yogi Bogi brings the reader into the purpose of the book and the exercises in an entertaining and non-threatening manner. The illustrations of the children are multicultural and include one child in a wheel chair. The choice of yoga postures are easy ones and yet the basics. It is possible to have fun while still learning how to do the yoga poses. This is written for children, though there is plenty of information to allow adults to engage in the postures too. The descriptions include both the physical and emotional benefits. Highly recommended for any beginner.

Excellent Book for Encouraging Self-Awareness in Children
This book introduces young readers to a kindly elephant named Ogi Bogi who lives in “Innerville.” Adults will recognize Innerville as a metaphor for compassionate self-awareness, but children will experience it as a magical land where they can feel safe and where their emotions and concerns are honored and accepted. As Ogi Bogi travels through Innerville, she comes into contact with children from a variety of cultural backgrounds, each of whom are experiencing particular challenges: Bob has a quick temper and wants to get along better with his peers, Sunee from Thailand is in a wheelchair, Raheem has difficulty breathing as a result of asthma. Ogi Bogi greets each child with an open heart and offers techniques from the ancient tradition of yoga to address the specific challenges they are facing. The techniques address a variety of situations: half sun salutes are described as a way to awaken energy, mudras help quiet the mind, twists and forward folds can be calming. Additionally, partner poses are introduced as a way to learn to work with others and simple breathing techniques and mantras (all in English) are offered as a way to focus the mind and to balance both sides of the brain.
The book is written for children in grades 3-5 and while the stories may resonate with a slightly younger audience, the techniques that Ms. Gibbs shares, with bold illustrations and clear and precise wording, will surely be engaging and inspiring to youngsters of all ages. – Ellen Campbell, the Life Force Yoga newsletter: www.yogawithellen.com
"While most yoga books for children focus on basic exercise routines in the form of animals or other symbolic shapes, they don't deal with the most important questions of personality and values development which are at the heart of yoga. While the yoga positions are practices to support this foundational work, Beth's book, along with the companion manual, gives practical tools for children to learn the real value of yoga." - Joseph Le Page, Founder and Director, Integrative Yoga Therapy
"Ogi Bogi," has taken the essentials of yoga and "translated" them for elementary school aged children--no small feat. Her use of "wake up, relax, focus, and feel their special place in the world" for each child visiting Innerville allows children to feel empowered about a variety of physical and psychological challenges. The valuable, reflective discussion questions following each chapter, allow this book to be used in a variety of group and educational settings." - Mala L. Matacin, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Psychology, University of Hartford
After the 2012 tragedy at Sandy Hook in Newtown Connecticut, the Vernon-Rockville school system surveyed their children and found that they were feeling unsafe and stressed. They instituted a 10-week trial yoga program, which I taught in 2013 using Beth's curriculum to structure the program. After a few weeks, the teachers remarked that the program had healed a schism in the classroom between students. Many children were showing signs of compassion, tolerance and kindness toward each other. For the first time that year the teachers felt they had more teachable hours in the classroom. - Laura Magnussen, M.A., RYT, Kripalu 500 Certified YogaKids® Facilitator
